If Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite winning Oscars Best Picture and BTS being the first KPop group to present at the Grammys still don’t say the obvious, the Korean wave has long evolved from fad to culture on a global scale.
Interestingly, Filipinos are atop the list of countries and communities immersed in K lifestyle – particularly in music. According to X (formerly Twitter), the Philippines ranks third on the app with the most stans and second when it comes to tweeting about KPop. According to TikTok, the country produces the second most number of videos on the app showing KPop content. Buying and collecting photo cards featuring one’s biases is also serious business in the country. Last but not the least, the fast rise of the PPop scene makes another story of just how wild the fanaticism has gone.
K-Pop = life for many Filipinos? Definitely an understatement!
