In the ever-evolving soundscape of OPM, few names resonate as deeply as Jonathan Manalo. A storyteller at heart and a visionary behind some of the most iconic Filipino anthems, Jonathan has been shaping the music of generations—one song, one story, one collaboration at a time.

From his humble beginnings in Valenzuela to the grand stage of Delia D., his debut musical, Manalo’s journey is one built on heart, humility, and a tireless pursuit of meaning through music. As he celebrates over two decades in the industry, Jonathan sits down with PARCINQ to reflect on his milestones, share insights on the evolution of P-pop, and speak on the transformative power of music—for artists and audiences alike.

This is Jonathan Manalo—in sync with his purpose, and still composing the soundtrack of Filipino resilience, pride, and love.

Q. You’ve been part of the music scene for many years now. Can you walk us through your journey into music production? What was the defining moment that made you pursue this career?

(Jonathan:) The defining moment that truly set everything in motion for me was winning the grand prize at the 2001 Himig Handog with my song “Tara Tena.” That win opened the door to so many opportunities! It was the spark that ignited a journey of creative milestones and collaborations that followed one after another. From that point on, I knew that songwriting and music production weren’t just a passion—it was my calling. I was just a kid from Valenzuela, and suddenly I was being given the chance to create music that could touch the hearts of so many people. It felt like fate had intervened, and I’ve never looked back since.

Q. As a composer and producer, you’ve worked with some of the biggest artists in the Philippines. How do you approach working with different musicians, given their unique styles?

(Jonathan:) My guiding principle as a songwriter and producer is to never impose my sound on the artist. I always start by getting to know them—understanding who they are, their authenticity, their voice, and their audience. It’s about creating a space where they feel comfortable expressing their true selves. Once I’ve connected with the artist, I can then craft a song and production that amplifies their identity while subtly adding my own creative touch. The balance is crucial—it’s not about me, it’s about their journey as an artist and how we can bring that to life together.

Q. If you weren’t in music, what do you think you’d be doing today?

(Jonathan:) If I weren’t in music, I’d probably be pursuing my degree in Advertising and Public Relations. I’ve always been fascinated by storytelling and connecting with people, so I could easily see myself working at a creative agency, managing campaigns, or leading a creative team. It’s a different way of channeling my energy, but the core of it is still about connecting and communicating with people. Whether through music or advertising, the goal is always the same—to share meaningful stories.

Q. PARCINQ is known as a hub for everything P-pop, and we’ve heard you’ve been part of a vocal group called V3. Can you tell us more about your experience with V3 and how it fits into the current landscape of P-pop?

(Jonathan:) V3 was a pop vocal group I formed when I joined the Himig Handog Song Festival. We performed my entry, and the experience really helped us establish our identity as a group. We went on to perform gospel repertoire, which became more in line with our purpose and mission as artists. When I look at today’s P-pop scene, I can see parallels with V3’s journey. P-pop groups today are more than just musical collectives—they’re platforms for young talent to grow, not just in terms of vocal performance but in terms of teamwork, resilience, and artistry. Many successful solo artists today came from these groups, and I’m excited to see where the future of P-pop is headed.

Q. Was there a particular project or song you worked on that became a turning point in your career? What made it so special for you?

(Jonathan:) There wasn’t just one turning point—it was more like a series of building blocks. Of course, “Tara Tena” was the beginning, but over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working with some of the most talented artists in the industry. From writing for Erik Santos, Kyla, Yeng Constantino, and Angeline Quinto, to collaborating with legends like Gary Valenciano, Ebe Dancel, and Ogie Alcasid, every project added to my growth. Writing the theme songs for Pinoy Big Brother and Ang Probinsyano also expanded my reach, but it’s the opportunity to work with P-pop groups like BINI, BGYO, SB19, 1621, and Wrive that really connects me to the future of OPM. I’m constantly evolving, and these collaborations play a huge role in that.

Q. How has the Filipino music industry evolved since you started, and where do you see it heading in the future?

(Jonathan:) The Filipino music industry has become far more dynamic and expansive. We now have so many platforms for artists to thrive, from digital streaming to social media and live performances. The power to reach audiences has become decentralized, and artists now have more control over their music and careers. I’m especially excited by the rise of independent artists who are carving out their own paths. The future of OPM looks promising—it’s about empowerment, inclusivity, and innovation. The industry will continue to evolve, and I believe we’re heading toward an era of even greater creative freedom and opportunities for our artists.

Q. Can you share the story behind the musical Delia D.? What inspired you to take on this project, and how did you approach it musically?

(Jonathan:) Newport World Resorts approached me after my 20th anniversary concert, asking if I’d be interested in developing a musical based on my song “Delia D.” At first, I didn’t know what the story would be, but I knew I wanted to say yes. That instinct turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Over the course of the next few years, we developed a narrative that reflected the spirit of the song—empowerment, resilience, and standing tall in your truth. Musically, I blended pop elements with theatrical sensibility, crafting original songs for key scenes. It was about capturing the essence of the story while ensuring the music stayed true to its emotional core.

Q. For someone who may not be familiar with Delia D., how would you describe its central themes or message?

(Jonathan:) Delia D. is all about finding your voice and standing tall in your truth, even when the world tries to dim it. It’s about resilience, self-worth, and the courage to keep dreaming without losing yourself in the process. The musical highlights the importance of authenticity—owning your story, embracing your struggles, and drawing strength from who you truly are. It’s an emotional, uplifting experience that celebrates the human spirit, no matter what obstacles we face.

Q. Your music has touched the lives of many listeners over the years. Now that it's being used in a live stage production, how do you think the audience's experience will differ from simply hearing the songs on a recording?

(Jonathan:) Hearing my music in a live stage production adds a whole new layer to the experience. The audience isn’t just listening to the songs—they’re living them through the performances, the choreography, and the visuals. The songs take on a different meaning when they’re part of a larger narrative, and the emotional connection becomes much more immediate and powerful. In Delia D., for example, the songs become part of the character’s journey, and that gives them a new depth and relevance. It’s an immersive experience that goes beyond the music itself.

Q. Many of your songs have become anthems for different generations of listeners. How do you see these familiar songs interacting with the new context of the musical?

(Jonathan:) When songs are placed in a new context, like a musical, they take on a different life. The meaning behind the lyrics can shift depending on the scene or character, and that’s what excites me. In Delia D., some of my older songs will resonate with a new generation of listeners, while others will connect with long-time fans in a deeper way. The added layers of the characters’ stories and the staging will allow these songs to speak to audiences in a fresh, new context.

Q. If there’s one message or feeling you hope the audience walks away with after watching Delia D., what would it be?

(Jonathan:) I hope the audience walks away with a renewed sense of purpose, knowing that they are deeply seen, loved, and valued. For the LGBTQ community, especially this Pride Month, I want them to know that grace is real and that they don’t have to lose themselves in the noise of the world to be fully loved. Delia D. is for everyone—no matter your journey. It’s a message of hope, dignity, and love, and I hope it inspires people to reflect on their own lives, to heal, and to continue dreaming without losing their truth.

Q. As a composer and producer, how do you continue to evolve as an artist? Are there any new directions you're excited to explore in future music projects?

(Jonathan:) I’m always looking for ways to push myself creatively, whether it’s discovering new talents, mentoring young songwriters and producers, or exploring new musical styles. As I gear up for my 25th anniversary next year, I have exciting projects in the works that I can’t wait to share. I’m constantly evolving as an artist, and I look forward to what the future holds for me and the OPM community. Stay tuned—there’s a lot more to come!

Don’t miss the encore performance of Delia D. at Newport World Resorts this July 28, 2025. Let this powerful production remind you of the strength in living your truth. Witness the music, the movement, and the message—live on stage.
